The White Defender is a hidden boss in Hollow Knight introduced in Hidden Dreams. It is the Dream form of the Dung Defender, at the peak of his past glory. Thanks to a recent update, Hollow Knight fans have been inquiring about how to officially start the new Grimm Troupe quest. The location of the Grimm Troupe and the process of starting the Grimm Troupe quest aren't immediately known. Instead, you'll need to seek out a hidden location before you can begin the Grimm Troupe quest in Hollow Knight.

THE WATCHER KNIGHTS. The Watcher Knights are a multi-enemy boss encounter at the top of the Watcher's Spire in the City of Tears. To find the arena, head left from King's Station, cross the. In the White Palace, when you knock the Pale King's corpse off the throne and the Kingsoul sprawls onto the floor, you can sit on the throne. Furthermore, if you wait around 5-10 seconds, a lute (I think?) will play a small part of the Hollow Knight theme. Still she retains her honour, offering fair challenge to the Hollow Knight: Nail against nail. A duel to the death.' Ogrim was revealed as a boss in a Kickstarter update with a different backstory: 'Deep in the Waterways beneath the City of Tears lurks a shunned being. Once a knight, now lost to puerile obsession: The Dung Defender.

Dung Defender is a Boss in Hollow Knight. Bosses are special Enemies that feature their own arena, a large amount of health, and a variety of unique moves and abilities. You will need to perform multiple attacks such as using The Nail and Nail Arts along with the Spells and Abilities in order to defeat them. Some bosses are capable of entering into a state of stagger after landing a number of attacks on them.

As soon as you encounter a boss, its name will appear on the screen, the music will change into a boss battle theme, and usually, paths connecting the arena will close or will be blocked leaving you no choice but to face these devastating and unique foes.

Skilled combatant living at the heart of the Waterways. Assails intruders with balls of compacted dung.

Fighting for 'honour', or for 'loyalty'.. you may as well be fighting for dust. If you want to kill, do it for your own sake. That is the nature of a true Hunter.

Dung Defender Strategies

Strategy Writeup

The Dung Defender's behavior consists of him trying to close the gap and to get close to The Knight. He likes to move around the arena while keeping you busy with forming dung balls that bounce around for a few seconds. Charms such as Thorns of Agony can seal the deal with landing an attack since if you are caught in between its attacks, you can guarantee an attack will land from the thorns that come out from The Knight after taking damage. Equipping the Quick Focus charm can also save you the time of recovering your health while maneuvering the arena.

At the beginning of the fight, take your time to avoid the balls and close in for the attack once he stops forming it. Strike once, step back, avoid the dung, and strike again after he stops forming one, rinse and repeat. Another tactic that can be used, esp when he enters his frenzy mode is to use Desolate Dive or Descending Dark while he is burrowed into the ground. Doing this will cause him to emerge out of the ground and will get knocked out for a brief moment.

As for evading, you can simply strike the dung balls with The Nail if it lands on you for it to bounce off towards a different direction.

Attacks & Counters

AttackCounter
Phase 1
Dung ThrowThe Dung Defender gathers dung and throws one or two balls that bounce around the arena and disappears after a few seconds. This inflicts damage upon contact but it can be bounced off before it lands on you by striking it with The Nail with an upward attack.
Defender's DiveLike a dolphin, the Dung Defender will dive into the ground and emerge out which deals damage upon contact. Since the height of how it emerges from the ground is low, you can either jump and dash towards the opposite direction or keep your distance.
Bursting AttackSimilar to its dive, the Dung Defender will dive into the ground but this time will remain underneath and will try to move towards The Knight's position. after a brief moment, the Dung Defender will emerge out of the ground where it jumps high and springs out four small dung balls. These balls do not bounce around the area and are destroyed upon landing on the ground - these can also be avoided by hitting it with The Nail for it to change its direction.
Curled up DefenderIn conjunction with the Dung Throw attack, the Dung Defender curls into a ball and bounces off the arena along with the dung balls. You can simply strike its shell to inflict damage and also changing its direction of where it will bounce off to.
Phase 2
FrenzyAt some point, after inflicting damage, the Dung Defender will enter a frenzied phase. He will start off with releasing a loud battle cry and will acquire increased speed, shorter recovery rate, and mix-ups with its attacks. This state only happens once.

Dung Defender Lore

The Dung Defender is both a boss and NPC in the game. Originally known as Ogrim being his real name, he was once a member of the Five Great Knights of Hallownest who was considered as the most loyal warrior of the five and fights for honor and glory. Unfortunately, at this period of time, Ogrim may be the only survivor out of the five great knights.

This strong-willed warrior is found in Royal Waterways rather than at the surface since he is protecting the body of his love Isma and her grave who was also once a warrior of the Five Great Knights of Hallownest.

He mistakes The Knight to be an enemy and initiates a battle. After defeating him, he will apologize and mentions The Knight's worthy and is capable of saving Hallownest. If players successfully defeat all three Dreamers, he will move to his cave where you will find him sleeping - this will give players the chance to use the Dream Nail to enter in his dream and challenge the White Defender. Right after fighting the White Defender five times, he will wake up and mentions how he can picture The Knight to be worthy to be with the greatest heroes. After leaving the area and returning, the Dung Defender will no longer be found and leaves a dung figure crafted into the Knight's likeness

The new 'Hidden Dreams'add-on to Hollow Knight includes more than few secrets for fans of this metroidvania to discover. There are new areas — but more importantly, two new bosses to encounter. And neither of them are particularly easy to find.

Hollow Knight is a side-scrolling action-RPG, pitting your tiny bug warrior against an endless hive of increasingly dangerous (and mysterious) monsters. Taking cues from fan-favorites like Dark Souls and Super Metroid, Hollow Knight adds greater depth to its metroidvania-style combat while still retaining a giant, open-ended map to explore. Hidden Dreams – Secret Boss Locations Guide

Two new bosses are included in the 'Hidden Dreams' update for Hollow Knight; the White Defender and Grey Prince Zote. Both have very specific requirements to locate, so we'll break down everything you need to know in the following sections.

White Defender Boss – How To Find:

  • Requirements:
    1. Acquire the Dream Nail
    2. Defeat the Dung Defender
    3. Defeat all three Dreamers.
    4. Acquire Descending Dark / Desolate Dive ability.

The White Defender is the Dream version of the Dung Defender, and his secret lair is located in the Dung Defender's boss arena in the Royal Waterways. One your ground-pound abilities to blast through the floor on the far-right side of the arena, near the switch.

Knight

Falling into the secret area, move left and use the Dream Nail on the sleeping defender to initiate the boss battle. He can be fought as many times as you want, but becomes increasingly more powerful after each defeat. You'll get 300 essence for defeating him the first time.

The White Defender has the second most health in the game — second only to the Radiance. Helvetica black font free.

Grey Prince Zote Boss – How To Find:

  • Requirements:
    • Acquire the Dream Nail.
    • Rescue Bretta in the Fungal Wastes.
    • Save Zote multiple times.
    • Defeat Zote in the Coliseum of Fools.

The foolhardy Zote becomes a boss battle if you save his love Bretta in the Fungal Wastes, sending her back to her home in Dirtmouth. You'll have to save Zote multiple times as you encounter him — he appears in Greenpath, Dirtmouth, City of Tears, Deepnest, the Coliseum of Fools, and finally returns to Dirtmouth.

After defeating Zote in the Coliseum, use the Dream Nail on the statue of Zote located in Bretta's basement, located in the town of Dirtmouth. Instead of fighting regular, weak Knight Zote, you'll battle Bretta's dream version — a muscular, powerful prince.

For defeating Grey Prince Zote, you'll earn 300 essence. If you manage to defeat him 10 times, his statue in Bretta's basement will turn solid gold.
